In 1951, St. Raphael's parish community was established. The community knew it wanted a school and a church, establishing both as it organized.

Things moved quickly.  The school first opened its doors in 1952 for 276 students in grades 1–6. The teaching staff consisted of 5 sisters of St. Joseph's, with Sr. Ellen Joan Malone as the principal. At that time, the student to teacher ratio was 50 to 1.

The school building and grounds have changed significantly over the years. The center section of today's building housed the church and the convent for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet. The section was repurposed in 1960 into today's gym, lunchroom, and central classrooms.

Our first Open House was held on March 14, 1971. This tradition continues every year and takes place during Catholic Schools Week. Parishioners, school families, and families considering St. Raphael's School for their children enjoy a science fair, art project displays, and classroom displays.

In 1973, the Athletic Association was formed with a $200 budget for boys’ basketball and baseball. Now, the Athletic Association manages uniforms, schedules, tournaments and banquets for more than 15 teams of boys and girls involved in the athletics program.

In 1982, PHT (Parents Helping Teachers) was formed to assist the school in promoting a high standard of education in a Christ centered atmosphere. The program stresses the need of parental involvement in their child's education and parental support of teachers, the school, and students. It also has goals to offset cutbacks in education funds by sponsoring fundraisers. The first Staff Appreciation Dinner was planned in May 1982, a tradition that continues with a theme, entertainment, and surprises all put together by parent volunteers.

In 1987, education costs were rising and a need for a proactive approach to tuition control was needed. The School Endowment fund was started with a goal of 1 million dollars. About three-fourths of that goal was raised and the million-dollar mark was achieved in 2000.

In 1998, Mr. Don Blake and Fr. Juettner established the School Advisory Commission. The school commission is active today in helping to advise and direct the growth of St. Raphael's School with members from the parish, parish staff, parents of school children and school staff.

Over the years, strong leadership has been a key role in making our school a success. Here is a list of those strong leaders and the years they served as principal:

Sr. Marie Arthur, 1958–1964

...become a part of it.
