Spelling Challenge

In addition to the workbook page assigned each week,  challenge spellers must choose 3 activities from the attached list. On the challenge spelling checklist, students must write the numbers of the three activities they do. They should also attach any paper activities. Parents must sign to verify that the activities were done. This will be due each Wednesday.

September 2nd, 2008

We had a super first day of school. The students prepared a little newletter about it. Ask to see it. Some of the things we did today: get to know your teacher, pass out books, share summer news, free choice reading, learn the routine, eat lunch . . . . . . . . . . . and lots more.

Here’s this week’s homework. Check often this week as this schedule is tentative as I see where the students are at.

Spelling: A pretest is given each week. Those who have zero or one word wrong do challenge spelling. Those with two or more words wrong do standard spelling. Homework is always due on Wednesday and the test is on Thursday. Because of the short week, homework this week is due Thursday and the test is on Friday.

Standard group does p. 4,5, and 6. Challenge group does p. 7 and three challenge activities. (I will post these separately). Challenge words this week are: acceptable, believe, calendar, definitely, embarrass, agent, airline, aware, degrees, gazing.

Math: Tuesday - pretest and practice sheet. Homework for the rest of the week will be determined by outcome of the pretest.

Reading: Students are expected to read a minimum of 20 minutes a night for 5 days a week. That’s at least 100 minutes per week. A form for recording at-home reading will be sent home this week.

All hardcover books must be covered by this Friday, September 5. Those include math, science, and spelling.

That’s it for now. Stayed tuned for more updates!
