Newsletter 11/26

November 26th, 2007

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed the nice long weekend. I spent time with family and friends and did a little Christmas shopping.

Here’s the news and homework of the week:

Spelling: Lesson 11 Standard group does p. 44-46. Challenge group does p. 47 (including the writing) and three activities from the challenge checklist. The activity list can be found on a previous post. I also keep a paper copy in the classroom for reference. Challenge words are: cords, blindfold, bride, throat, scarecrow, committed, fourth, height, generally, intelligent.

Reading: We began a new novel study today. We’re reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Just a couple reminders - students should continue to read nightly and record minutes on their reading record for November. Also, they should continue working on their AR goal for the second quarter. I entered the goal into the program, so if you have access you should be able to monitor where they are at.

Math: M - L42 T - L43 W - L44 Th - L45 F - Test and worksheet

Grades: I will be posting some more grades in the next day or two. Please check them about once a week or so to see if there’s any late work. I also try to send out email reminders when I have the time.

Have a “grate”ful week.

Be Thankful

November 26th, 2007

Thanksgiving always turns me toward gratitude.  I remind myself of how many wonderful things I have in my life, and how often what I thought was not so wonderful turns out to be a “blessing in disguise.”  For advent this year, one thing we are doing is writing in a gratitude journal each day.  Thank you for your presence in my life.

Be Thankful
By Author Unknown

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don’t know something,
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.
Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations,
because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge,
because it will build your strength and character.
Be thankful for your mistakes.
They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you’re tired and weary,
because it means you’ve made a difference.
It’s easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes
to those who
are also thankful for the setbacks.
Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,
and they can become your blessings.

Spelling Challenge Activities

November 12th, 2007

In addition to the workbook page challenge spellers must choose 3 activities from the attached list. On the challenge spelling checklist, students must write the numbers of the three activities they do. They should also attach any paper activities. Parents must sign to verify that the activities were done. This will be due each Wednesday.

Here’s the scoop for the week:

Math: M - L34 T - L35 W - Test day, worksheet for homework Th - L36 F - L37

Spelling: Lesson 9 Standard group does p. 36-38. Challenge group does p. 39 (including the writing) and the challenge worksheet (excluding the writing). Challenge students also must make a puzzle with the ten words. I know there have been some problems on Discovery Puzzle Maker. It’s also possible to make puzzles on Spelling Wizard. Try that one. Challenge words are guarantee, independent, license, occasion, acquire plus the five on p. 39

Social Studies: State Project Each student has been assigned a state from the Southeast region to report on. They must find information for a fill-in-the-blank type worksheet. They must also make a poster. The poster must include the name of the state, an outline map with the capital and major cities plus major bodies of water. It also must include the state flower, tree, flag, and bird. We started them in school today, so most have a good beginning. Some work may have to be done at home. I have posted many internet sites that would be helpful on my delicious site. Projects will be due sometime next week. I’ll post the exact date.

Green and White Day: This Thursday

Report Cards: Come home this Thursday

Rake-a-thon: Friday is a pledge turn in day.

Service Project:  Please send in cereal.   See separate post for details.

Have a good week.

PS Homework is always open to change depending on circumstances.
